My Favorite New Features

Among the new features introduced in V-Ray 7, several are not very applicable to interior design and kitchen design…but there are a few that I am very excited about. Here they are:

New 3D Objects with Variants

Chaos added over 400 3D objects to their library, which I’m extremely happy about since I love using their objects in my designs. They have also introduced Variants, which are different versions of the same 3D asset.  You can add a filter to search for Variants, and you can control which variant is displayed in the Asset Editor.

Now these are mainly bushes, flowers, and trees, but I hope they will issue variants for furniture and decor soon. It would be nice to have the ability to easily change between a dark leather couch and a camel color couch using a dropdown, instead of having to replace the material.

Faster V-Ray GPU and caustics

Rendering time, especially with interactive rendering, has always been a challenge for 3D artists. V-Ray version 7 has several performance upgrades that should speed this time up, which we can all appreciate. They also included some additional Caustic updates for lighting and materials, so the render quality should be slightly improved as well.

Landscape and Exterior Improvements

It seems that many of the enhancements in V-Ray for SketchUp version 7 are geared toward exterior landscapes and architecture. For example, the updated Sun and Sky –  with the updated PRG Sky, you can create vibrant, richly saturated blue skies and realistic sunsets. You can even render the sky at various observer altitudes.

Another example is the Object Variants from the Chaos Cosmos library.  Those are mainly for trees, bushes, and flowers, and is a feature that many landscape designers and architects will appreciate.

The Scatter edge trimming feature of V-Ray 7 is another one geared more towards exterior modeling.  This will allow better control of scatter edges for things like grass, trees, and plants.

What I Wish Was Included in Version 7

While V-Ray 7 presents a commendable range of features, there remain certain aspects and functionalities that users may desire to be included or enhanced in this version, especially given the rapid advancements in rendering technology and the growing demands of visual production workflows.

Generative Image Creation

One area of improvement that would be highly beneficial to many users is the incorporation of generative image creation tools.  We’ve all seen Midjourney and other similar systems and their amazing ability to render very realistic images based on text prompts.

A Bedroom rendered with MidJourney - Maybe V-Ray will use AI prompts in the future?
A Bedroom rendered with MidJourney - Maybe V-Ray will use AI prompts in the future?

And it starts from nothing. Well, sometimes you can import a picture or URL as a basis, but that’s all it takes.  Now, consider SketchUp and V-Ray.  We have a 3D model with materials and lighting as well.  So if we could input that into AI, along with some text prompts (or even object-specific text prompts), and have it generate an image, how great would that be?  Especially for beginners or non-techy folks.

SketchUp’s diffusion tool is a step in this direction, but having AI text prompts at the object level (and globally) would allow for better control of the output, which is the biggest obstacle right now for AI.

More Objects in the Chaos Cosmos Library

While Chaos did at a fair number of objects to the Chaos Cosmos library, I would like to see even more.  The library of available objects and materials is really small comparted to other sites like Poliigon or those given with Unreal Engine.

Having a vast library of these objects would make V-Ray (and Corona) more desirable for designers.  Hopefully we will see a much larger dump of objects in the next Chaos Cosmos update.

9:16 Portrait Aspect Ratio

For those of us that render for social media, it would be nice if this new version had an option in the Aspect Ratio dropdown for “9:16 – Portrait”.  There is a “5:4 – Portrait” option already, but why not a 9:16!?  The workaround is we have to select “Custom” and then manually type in the Image Width/Height.
